6 Inspiring Women from the Genealogy of Christ

Sarah

Sarah was a strong woman! God promised Abraham, descendants. God kept His promise to Abraham through Sarah, who bore Isaac. Sarah was well past her years, but by faith she received the power to conceive (Hebrews 11: 11), because Sarah herself considered God who promised, to never fail and be faithful.

Hebrews 11:11 By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.

Leah

Leah was unloved. She was the first wife of Jacob, but unfortunately not his first love. Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. But the Lord saw Leah's loneliness, and blessed her with children. In fact, 6 out of 12 Israelite tribes came through Leah. Leah showed her faithfulness to God every time she named a child, one of whom was Judah, through whom the genealogy continues.

Ruth 4:11 And all the people who were at the gate, and the elders, said, "We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman who is coming to your house like Rachel and Leah, the two who built the house of Israel;...

Tamar

Tamar was treated unfairly! She ended up pretending to be a prostitute to her father-in-law Judah. She was actually fighting for her rights to bear a child. Her methods were definitely unorthodox and not suited for this modern world, but her story is an example of God working wonders through any situation. It is through this predicament that she gives birth to twins Perez & Zerah and also be mentioned in the genealogy of Christ, because the line continues through Perez.

Genesis 38:26 So Judah acknowledged them and said, "She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son." And he never knew her again.

Rahab

Rahab was a harlot by trade. But her life took an unexpected turn, when she received the grace of God; and despite her past, became a faithful servant of God. By providing shelter to Israelite soldiers, she put her own life at risk, while demonstrating faith in God (Hebrews 11: 31, James 2: 25). Rahab receives the grace of God and through Salmon, begets Boaz, and thus the genealogy continues.

BE like the Heroic Rahab!

Hebrews 11:31 By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.

James 2:25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

Ruth

Ruth was a Moabite, who suffered many losses of close family members. But Ruth was bold enough to follow her mother-in-law Naomi to unchartered waters when she said "Your God is my God". Because she followed Naomi, eventually she met Boaz, and together they became the grandparents to King David and propagated the lineage of Jesus. Her faithfulness and boldness are her strengths. (Ruth 1: 16)

Ruth 1:16 But Ruth said: "Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God.

Bathsheba

The beautiful Bathsheba, suffered greatly. First she was "taken" by King David, and soon after, her husband is reported dead in war. She then suffered the loss of her newborn baby as well, again as a result of David's mistake. But she endured. God redeemed her pain. She then gave birth to Solomon, and thus got to be in the genealogy of Christ as well. She was given the due honor in the due time. (1 Kings 2: 19).

I Kings 2:19 Bathsheba therefore went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her and bowed down to her, and sat down on his throne and had a throne set for the king's mother; so she sat at his right hand.
