Jesus was born Before Christ (BC) - Here's Why!

Jesus Christ… was born before Christ.

Let me explain!



Around AD 525, a monk named Dionysius Exiguus was asked to calculate Easter dates.
He didn’t want to keep using a Roman calendar that honored emperors who persecuted Christians. There wasn't even an "AD 525" at that time, they had different calendar systems.
So he reset history around Jesus and introduced Anno Domini — the “Year of the Lord.”

He calculated Jesus’ birth as AD 1.

But Dionysius made some errors. He didn’t have access to all the historical data we have today. Couple of centuries ago, scholars started seeing the miscalculation.

The Bible gives us clearer anchors.

Matthew 2:1 says Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great.
History tells us Herod died in 4 BC.

Matthew also records that Herod ordered the killing of all boys two years old and under in Bethlehem.
That means Jesus could have been up to two years old before Herod’s death.

That alone places Jesus’ birth between 6 and 4 BC.

Luke adds more detail.

Luke 2:1-2 mentions a census during the reign of Caesar Augustus (the 15th year), connected with Quirinius. Roman records place that census affecting Judea around 6–5 BC, matching Matthew’s timeline.

Then Luke 3:23 says Jesus was “about thirty years old” when He began His ministry.
Luke carefully dates that moment to the reign of Tiberius Caesar, which places Jesus’ ministry around AD 27–29.

Do the math, and everything points back to the same window:
Jesus was born between 6 and 4 BC.


So yes — Jesus Christ was born before Christ.

We didn’t get the year right.
We don’t know the exact date.
And December 25th? That came much later.

So this Christmas, stop worrying if we should celebrate Christmas or not, if Jesus was really born on December 25. We didn't even get the year right, let alone the date.

Lean in to the real Christmas spirit - It’s about the incarnation. The supernatural God limiting Himself to become man (John 1:14). Hope entering the world. 

Focus on Christ. Because even if we got the date wrong, we didn’t get Him wrong.
